Direct Mail Isn’t Dead

Imagine a form of advertising that can potentialy reach every household within the United States. It averages a $7.20 return for each and every dollar spent. It currently represents 12% of all advertising expenditures, that’s over $45 billion dollars in spending a year. It has been shown to increase the value of a customer by 10% if your business is just a website, and by 188% if your business is brick & mortar. If all three are used, the complete synergy has been shown to increase customer value by a total of 465% vs. just a brick & mortar location.

And yet, despite of all of this, “experts” are claiming that you should ignore it completely as a sales channel.

What are they thinking?

Direct Mail has been shown to be one of the most highly effective forms of advertising availiable. Yes, email gives a higher ROI; that’s because it’s so cheap. A well crafted direct mail piece out pulls a well crafted email by anywhere from 2-4x. If you’re mailing everybody, sure go with an email. If you know what kind of customers you want, or who you want as a customer, then you can’t beat a targeted direct mail piece. Sure, it will cost you a little more; but you will get more of the high quality customers that you are aiming for. Also realize, 25% of the households in this country don’t even have internet access, but they still spend money. These households tend to be in the 35+ demographic and are heavily concentrated in the baby boomers. How much of the GDP do they control again?

Still don’t believe me? When was the last time you received a piece of mail with your name on it speaking directly to your businesses needs? When did you last read a handwritten letter? Direct mail is easier to target than paid search ads. Direct mail is also trusted more than email, and harder to destroy.

Hopefully I’ve convinced you to reconsider including direct mail in your marketing mix, if not I wish you best of luck in your marketing endevors. (I’ll just be over here mailing those customers that you missed.)

Similarities in every day things can help you get a better understanding of how things work. In today’s example, we will see what electricity and being coachable in your home-based business have in common.

As humans, our relationship with electricity is nearly impossible to disconnect from our lives. Electricity in the life of every day, civilized people exists even when all the lights are off: lightning in the sky or a static spark from friction.

The unseen force even powers the human nervous system, regulating all bodily functions like breathing and every precious heartbeat. There are three key components to understanding how electricity works. They are voltage, amps and resistance.

In order for electricity to flow in a current, there must be some sort of force or pressure pushing the electrons along. This force in the world of electricity is known as voltage.

But, in the world of home-based business, this “pressure” is known as your passion to become successful.

When you are building your home business, if you neglect passion for success, you will be like a light fixture without light bulbs, having all the right equipment but void of that which makes you “shine” and draw others to you!

In business, the voltage of passion is everything.

Part two of how electricity works is the amount of force applied by the source determines how much voltage goes through the circuit. That number of electrons which move through the circuit is called amps.

As an Independent Distributor, your team members represent the “amps” for your business.

It is a lot more fun to build your business fast, than it is to build it slow, so adding new team members, who add new team members, who add new team members will be the fastest way to skyrocket your business to the top!

In relation to your home-based business, amps can also be the magnificent amount of money you can make through the compensation plan that is in place.

Couple the compensation plan with hungry, new front line Independent Distributors, and you have all the makings of a high voltage income-generating business on your hands!

The last piece of the electricity puzzle has to do with the kind of resistance that is working against the electrical current.

For example, think of water flowing through a pipe. The larger the pipe, the easier it is for the water to move through.

The “resistance” in your business is how well you stay “plugged in” to the business-building processes that are in place, such as conference calls, webinars, local meetings and Corporate Events.

The more you plug-in to these activities and get your team members to do the same, the least amount of resistance you will experience while getting your business to grow “lightning” fast!

Do not be afraid to utilize the knowledge of those who have blazed a trail for you. In most instances, leaders in your particular company are the ones “leading” these types of activities.

Let these leaders help train you and your people! After all, they are leaders because they have gotten where you are trying to go, so follow in their footsteps by plugging in to what they are doing!

So like electrical currents, as an Independent Distributor, in order to stay “powered up”, you have got to stay plugged in!

And just like with electricity, if you have the three key components in place: the voltage of passion, the amps of adding new team members, and the resistance of staying plugged in to business-building practices, there is no way the “current” of your life won’t take you to all the places you’ve been dreaming of!

Much of the time in mlm we are laser focused on the activity of getting new people into our mlm business. You call leads or email them or entice them in whatever way your selected marketing model calls for and you press for them to enroll in your network marketing business and when they do not join up you bad mouth them.

Low Point

Well, there came a time in my career where I was purchasing five dollar Television telephone confirmed network marketing leads and shelling out up to $500 a month on these leads to try to develop my mlm business. I phoned these folks and they failed to join the opportunity and I trashed the leads until . . . (and this is something that I haven’t revealed to anyone)….I thought to myself what a waste, I am paying oodles of cash and getting no ROI, there’s got to be something I can do to improve this.

I started to look into ways that I might possibly generate income from these lifeless network marketing leads and at minimum recoup a small piece of some of my capital investment. I considered what I could do to improve my situation for about a 7 days before it dawned on me. I realized that just because these folks were not interested in my network marketing business it didn’t mean that they still were not interested in signing up for a business opportunity.

So I thought . . .

How I can I supply these lifeless leads additional possibilities in a way in which I could at least make back a little money? Then the Ah Ha moment came! Pay Per Lead Affiliate Programs for network marketing business opportunities!

That’s where the mlm leads came from in the 1st place, why not ship them back where they came from and produce a little money on the way out? Why purchase MLM leads? I have absolutely no clue !

In reality, I strongly oppose purchasing these types of lists, having done so myself a couple of times. I got burned and I do not desire the same to happen to you.

Allow me to explain my arguments against purchasing these lists.

The Leads Are Probably Outdated

When you purchase a M.L.M leads list, you are purchasing a collection of names of people that ( at one time or another ) voiced an interest in operating a home based business.

You won’t know when they expressed this interest, or to whom, or anything about the situation. All you will know is that the folks on your list could hopefully be interested in what you have to offer.

Sadly, most of the leads on your list will have moved on when you get to them. Either they have joined another business, or they have stopped being interested, or they weren’t seriously invested in the process to begin with.

Because you do not know the specifics of how they sought out a home enterprise opportunity, you haven’t any way of knowing who’s still worth investing your time in and who’s not.

The Leads Unnecessarily Restrict your Options

Another argument against M.L.M. contact lists is that they pointlessly limit you to just the names on the page.

You are basically paying someone else to tell you about possible candidates, but you don’t know what their criteria are for selecting these prospects. You are literally placing the future of your company in somebody else’s hands!

It’s much smarter to seize control over your own network marketing plan and build your leads alone.

Don’t restrict yourself to leads that other people select ; decide how you want to build and grow your company and go from there.

There is no reason not to trust your own judgment, and a large amount of reasons to be cautious of people who make their living selling off people’s names.

The title attracts those who are failure oriented. This is a ready excuse for those who are not realizing their true potential. This negative message about their own industry speaks volumes. Why use such a detractor in your own business?
